Kate Spade is an American fashion designer, who founded the clothing company Kate Spade New York—also known as Kate Spade. Kate Spade was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 21, 1963. She was raised by her mother in Kansas City and eventually moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. Before starting her own business, Spade worked for Perry Ellis as well as Donna Karan, designing handbags and accessories for Perry Ellis. In 1993, she opened the first Kate Spade shop on Manhattan's Canal Street with business partner Andy Spade
The company's first line of handbags, called New York, was a great success and a second store followed soon after. In 2002, the company had a retail presence in twenty-one countries worldwide and their profits reached $100 million. For the past twenty-two years, Spade has been designing handbags for many celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Lynda Carter.
